Until now we saw a lot of multi functional pieces of furniture but nothing like this before. This ingenious storage system doubles as a giant LED clock, so you’ll actually be getting some utility out of an otherwise single-purpose bookshelf. The oversize clock conceals red 7-segment LED displays for each digit in the edges of the storage cubes. Measuring in at a 28 (w) x 14 (h) x 5 (d), you certainly won’t miss the time on this clock. A really unique way to know what time it is …and I’m sure that this clock would look awesome in the dark, just try to imagine. Despite not being able in the US ( Hong Kong manufacturer, Anka ), it’s good inspiration for a little DIY project! - Via - Technabob

There comes a time in our lives, when we need some time alone. And where can we do that better than in the middle of the nature. Architect Emilio Ambasz knew all these and in 1975 he designed the House of Spiritual Retreat (Casa De Retiro Spiritual).

Built on a 1,000 ha estate, the Book House is located just 25 miles (40km) north of Seville in Spain. Surrounded by the beautiful Sierra Morena mountains, in a Spanish countryside scenery, with a man-made lake, olive trees, evergreen oaks and wild flowers, the picture is close to perfection.

Two steep cantilevered staircases climb on the two tall white walls that rise like sails from the lush green ground, only to meet at the right place, a window that offers a great view of the whole area and especially over the lake. The most interesting thing is the mysteriously sunken courtyard. That’s where the actual house is. It has large rooms with hidden arrangements and light coming in through serpentine openings that will blow your mind.

That’s quite an artistic vision and Ambasz materialized it greatly. Check out the video below. - via UltimateHouse

This very interesting and beautiful rug is from Top Floor, a multi-award winning design studio based in London, and it was designed by designed by Esti Barnes. An organic floral pattern reaches into the whitespace on this rug, yet this pattern is more than grooves and layers. Designer Esti Barnes has cut these layers right through the rug itself, exposing the bare wood below. The hand-tufted Ethereal rug can be ordered by customers in any color or size. - Via - Gearcrave

Often overshadowed in the prefab debate by their sexier cousin, the modular home, manufactured homes are not usually synonymous with sustainability or style. Until now, that is. Introducing HOM (pronounced ‘home’ and written with a fancy phonetic symbol), a new line of green manufactured homes, furniture, lighting and accessories for the consumer who cares about living lightly on the land, in style, and with a close connection to nature. Designed by KAA Design Group, a Los Angeles-based architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and branding company, HOM is sold as a lifestyle, not just a house, and proves beyond a doubt that this is not your average double wide.

For the past two years, we’ve been media sponsors for the always excellent West Coast Green conference. WCG pushes the envelope on innovation and sustainability, and this year will be no different. Today I received renderings of the West Coast Green Showhouse, aka the SG Blocks 2008 Showhouse, built by SG Blocks and designed by The Lawrence Group. It’s a 1700 sf container home, but you probably can’t tell just by looking. Sustainability will be number one, with GreenPoint and LEED certification in the plans. Plus, it seems that ecofabulous will be doing the interior design work, so the home, you can believe, will be modish, posh, and green.
We’ve talked about SG Blocks previously, they’re a leader in the container construction space. Containers are abundant and cheap, ranging in price from as low as $500 to $2000+ per module. They’re also strong and SG Blocks likes to use them to build hurricane-resistant housing.
You can believe we’ll keep the info flowing because this house is about to get plastered all over the news.

Taking a cue from eco-friendly skyscrapers and cars, religious places have started adopting sustainable technologies in the right earnest. The latest to join the green bandwagon is San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral. Juan Herreros Architects designed this gorgeous green complex to seamlessly integrate into the sweeping undergrowth of a forest bustling with biological activity. The verdant structure features an elongated low-profile layout to help it blend in with the treetops, situating it as “a new species that respects, protects and enhances the forest”. An excellent example of low-impact green architecture, the design recently took second place in an international competition to design a new building for the CEA Cadarache Research Center.

FAK3, pronounced “fake” is one of the most innovative and edgiest design companies in Asia. They are responsible for creating an elliptical cabinet that can rotate 360-degrees. It’s a concept of open multi-functional spaces that facilitate a variety of activities like dining, studying, recreation and entertainment.

The main feature of such a cabinet, should be easy rotating, but guess what Fak3 took care of it. Even though it’s fitted with industrial strength bearings that can support up to two tonnes, it only takes one finger to rotate it.

The longer widths include a set of keyboards and a desk, while the shorter ones accommodate storage and a TV. It’s a great idea if you consider that it can be turned on one side, each day, for an ever-changing ambiance. - via Yanko
