Except for the electricity meters and lack of power lines, some off-grid homes are totally indistinguishable from other houses in the neighborhood.

In this picture that you can see above is the Van Geet Off-Grid Home, sponsored by the U.S. Renewable Energy Agency. and Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency near Denver, Colorado. The home takes advantage of 300 days of sun to produce lots of its power from a couple of solar arrays, and the home’s careful siting makes the most of passive solar and daylighting to minimize the energy needed to run the home. Across the plane may banks are going greener than they normally do. I think that if a bank are green will have more customers that if is a normal bank. Last week in Mishawaka, Indiana was opened First Federal Savings Bank.

The local press gave the retail pad some pretty positive coverage and for good reason too. The LEED Registered, $2.5 M branch relies on a wind turbine, geothermal heating, permeable pavers, solar panels, energy efficient windows and a grid board compressed-straw panels.
